Google 官方的 Android 訓練課程上線了

Google 官方的 Android 訓練課程終於上線了。看到這個，就讓我想到從去年二月起曾經參加過然後到今年六月終止的 Google Android Developer Qualification Program。剛剛稍微看了一下這次官方的訓練課程內容，從如何針對不同螢幕尺寸及精細度 (density) 的支援，到如何處理音樂播放、改進程式的電源管理效率、帳號處理、如何根據不同條件讓使用者下載不同版本的程式等等都有介紹，感覺是還蠻實用的。有興趣的人可以去看看囉！:)

Recent code building break in Android Open Source Project

If you are using Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard like I do and you have synchronized the Android source code from the Android Open Source Project, you probably found that you will get a code building break message as the followings:

target SharedLib: libwebcore
(out/target/product/generic/obj/SHARED_LIBRARIES/libwebcore_intermediates/LINKED/libwebcore.so)
out/target/product/generic/obj/SHARED_LIBRARIES/libwebcore_intermediates/WebCore/css/CSSParser.o:
In function `WebCore::CSSParser::lex(void*)':
external/webkit/WebCore/css/CSSParser.cpp:4219: undefined reference to `WebCore::CSSParser::lex()'

This is because the flex version in the Android source code is been upgraded to 2.5.4a and it causes some errors when trying to find the lex() function in CSSParser. To solve the problem, you can use MacPort 1.8 to install a flex verison then use that flex to replace the version in the Android source code. The commands would be:

cd prebuilt/darwin-x86/flex/
mv flex-2.5.4a flex-2.5.4a-OLD
ln -s /opt/local/bin/flex flex-2.5.4a

touch external/webkit/WebCore/css/tokenizer.flex

For more information, check this issue in the Android bug base.

So far I have successfully build my code on my 15.4" MacBook Pro. If you also meet the issue, you can give it a try.

Android Developer Phone 2 now is out

The famous Google Ion phone now is available to Android developers as Android Developer Phone 2:

However, the Google Ion logo is gone. Now you can see the purchase option for Android Developer Phones here:

To purchase the phone you must be a registered Android developer on the Android Market website, so you would need USD 25 + USD 399 + shipping fee to get the phone.

It's a 32B phone, which is the European / United States version of HTC Magic, not a 32A phone as the Asian version. That means it has less ROM as 192 MB, not 288 MB.

On the purchase page it states that you can rebuild the Android system and flash to the device, but it seems the boot loader of the device is still a locked version? Why I said this? See the Google Ion page on the HTC website, it said the device is coming with "hboot 1.33.3004 (locked)". Or maybe the hboot on ADP2 is unlocked already? If you know the answer, please let me know. :)

How to build Android source code for your ADP1 / T-Mobile G1 / HTC Magic

Some of you might already know how to build Android source code for Android DevPhone rev.1 / T-Mobile G1 (aka HTC Dream) / HTC Magic (aka HTC Sapphire). If you don't know how to build, try the instructions in this page.

However, since HTC Magic has 2 versions (PVT32A / PVT32B), the rom images built from the Android source code might only work on PVT32B version because the bootloader / radio images are different. You better watch out for the differences.

After you build the rom images for your device, you can use the fastboot tool in the folder to flash your device if you have already flashed engineering bootloader into your device.

其實遠傳這一支 Z1 除了沒 Google 服務軟體以及 UI 有客製化佈景主題之外，骨子裡還是一支 Android 1.5 (Cupcake) 的手機。要跑 Android 程式還是可以的，如果不透過遠傳 S 市集的話，應該還是可以透過 USB 連線或是網頁上下載 APK 檔案到手機內的方式安裝軟體的。只是這樣的安裝方式對使用者來說不方便性比較高。

一般使用 Android Type 1 授權的手機目的就是要低價位，不過個人感覺遠傳似乎想透過提供自有的 S 市集來提供軟體以走中價位的策略。這其實無可厚非。手機上不提供 Android Market 只提供 S 市集對遠傳來說是有好處的，因為從軟體發佈到傳輸通信費都可以自己一把抓，也不用付 Google 權利金，對岸中國移動也是這樣搞的。唯一目前對遠傳比較不利的是 S 市集東西還不多，只是這個可以慢慢培養本地的開發社群和邀請國外軟體商開發中文軟體來著手，或許這是為何遠傳這麼積極和政府單位合辦程式競賽和在 S 市集網站上鼓勵程式開發者送交程式給他們的原因。目前也的確看到國內外都有廠商已經在 S 市集上提供軟體了 (雖然不多)。

Android 手機沒了 Google 服務軟體會影響到的是手機上聯絡人/郵件/行事曆的資訊。因為一般 Android 手機的相關資訊是存在 Google 帳號內的，沒了 Google 服務軟體就不能讓手機上的聯絡人/郵件/行事曆軟體跟 Google 帳號更新資訊，而只能像一般手機一樣只將資料存在手機上。或許這是遠傳在手機內提供第三方 RoadSync 軟體的原因，因為 RoadSync 是和 MS Exchange 帳號做綁定，除了更新聯絡人的資訊，也能用 Push Mail 的形式來接收使用者的 MS Exchange 郵件，還能跟 MS Exchange 上的行事曆做連動更新。只是，一般消費者比較少有 MS Exchange 帳號，有這種帳號的大多是商務型使用者，在使用上和 Google 帳號比起來比較沒那麼普遍。我想這應該是遠傳目前能找到還算可以的解決方案了。

整個看起來其實遠傳推的 Z1 還是有他的賣點，算是走和目前中華電信以及台灣大哥大不同的路。只是這個沒了 Google 服務但是有替代方案的手機是不是還能吸引大家去購買，其實是一個可以觀察而且有趣的題目，個人是還蠻拭目以待的。:)

My opinion on the Google Cease-and-Desist letter

Recently people are discussing about the Google CnD letter sent to Cyanogen to stop the distribution of Google closed-source apps. The reason most people who do not agree with Google is that Cyanogen only made Android ROMs for Google Experience Phone (GEP), which already have Google closed-source apps in it. However, I have a different view on this.

First, I think no matter Google closed-source apps (like Android Market or Gmail) or open-source projects (like Android), they are all originally developed (and owned) by Google. Google just choose to release Android in Apache License so people can use (and modify) them to have a better platform. However, Google did not choice to release Android Market / Gmail as open-source apps so they still have the rights for these apps to decide who can use (and redistribute) them.

Second, GEP does have Google closed-source apps in it. However, the manufacturer of GEP have got the license from Google to distribute the Google closed-source apps, but Cyanogen does not. And to say the Cyanogen ROMs are only made for GEP is non-sense because it only happen in good-will. Any hackers can get the Google closed-source apps from the ROM to redistribute them again. If that happens (and do happened), then it harms the rights that Google has. If Cyanogen has made some closed-source apps by himself and put them in his Android ROMs to redistribute, I would not say it's not right and will be happy to see this because he is the owner of the apps and his decision might benefit people who have the ROM. But if he puts some apps that are not made by himself into his ROM and does not have the agreement to authorize such things, then I cannot see why it's wrong for Google to send the CnD letter.

I still don't understand why people are still arguing on this. Is it not so simple?

住院開刀

現在的自己正在醫院裡，準備明天的開刀。
其實自己是有點害怕的，因為是第一次要做全身麻醉的手術。
不過，手術還是一定要做的，只能給自己加油囉

虎妹因為還在坐月子，所以和孩子一起留在家裡。
其實我比較擔心的是沒了我，虎妹自己要如何自己一個人帶孩子的問題。
白天有坐月子媽媽陪她，還比較放心一點。
到了晚上只有她自己跟孩子，少了我可以跟她交班，她應該會帶得比較累吧....
還好小恩恩是不太會吵的那種小孩，除了喝奶和處理大小便之外很少醒來，都在睡。
希望上帝保守他們在家順利。

當然希望自己明天開刀也順利。
應該明天早上進手術房以後睡一覺起來，手術就完成了吧。
然後後天就可以開開心心的一個人出院了 (笑)。

今天下午到醫院報到之後，在病房就等醫生來巡房。
醫生來了之後，問我說可不可以讓他的醫學生們來做個手術前的病史與身體狀況詢問。
反正也不是第一次給有教學門診的醫生看，就答應他了。
於是七八個還掛著實習醫生的學生們就進來，
之後就由醫生指定的女實習醫生來問病史以及目前身體狀況了。

說實話問得還蠻詳細的。
之前虎妹在其他醫院做過幾次手術都沒有這樣詳細的問過。
拉拉雜雜問了一個小時，讓我連馬先生的國際記者會都錯過。
不過被問完以後的感覺是舒服的
這家醫院以對病人尊重著稱還是不錯的。
醫院環境也是美式類似飯店式管理，
整體來說是舒服的。
只希望自己明天手術也可以順利。

晚上教會小組長夫婦和姊姊分別來探望，
也為我禱告，真是甘心啊。
也願上帝祝福他們。

該睡了，明天早上是第一刀。
祝我開刀順利吧。

7/25 小恩恩出生

終於，虎妹在醫院安胎安了三個星期之後，小恩恩在 7/25 出生了：

看著小一號的自己，心裡有著奇特的感覺

不過因為算提早一週生，所以小傢伙有點小。還好重量還夠重，不用住到保溫箱。

現在回家三週後，小恩恩已經越來越重了。眼睛還蠻迷人的：

希望他可以平安長大，神與人愛他的身量都漸漸增長。

近日事多

也許是上帝給我們的考驗。
除了之前自己的開刀，
虎妹在周二突然有早產現象大出血，
緊急送了汐止國泰醫院，
在安胎兩天之後終於出院。
汐止國泰的醫生建議出院後虎妹繼續臥床不能動，
不過在週五想說還是回原來的醫院看一下，
結果醫生一聽到狀況就建議繼續住院安胎，
所以現在就住在醫院了。
看來應該會在醫院住到生，
還好現在是在家工作，
照顧虎妹比較方便。

偏偏在這時候我還是要再開第二次的刀，
因為是要全身麻醉，
所以醫生說這次要住院兩三天。
想跟醫生說可不可以延期到虎妹生產完再開刀，
因為現在虎妹只有我能照顧她。
到了虎妹生產完後就有做月子媽媽可以幫忙照顧，
會比較安心一點。
不過也許不太容易，
畢竟自己要開的刀是要跟上帝的時間競賽，
而且其實虎妹現在住在醫院有護士幫忙也許會更好，
還是明天跟醫生談過之後再看看吧....

總之自己只能樂觀，
很多事瞎想也是沒有用的。
一切都交在神的手中吧。

離職後又工作了

離開前一個工作已經滿兩個月了。
其中休息了一個月，
搬了一個家，
開了一次刀，
之後到了台北內湖一家朋友開的公司工作，
又回到自己熟悉的工程師工作。

這樣算是可惜嗎?
從一個股王到一個小公司，
然後從程式經理回到主任工程師。

在股王的公司的確是工作很有滿足感。
自己做的東西可以讓全世界的人用，
和同事一同國外長期出差的時候是自己工作最快樂的時候。
後來當經理時也學到不少管理的東西，
不過壓力也很大，
自己也把身體弄壞了。

到了小公司，
做的東西其實也是很有挑戰性。
因為不是做自己過去兩年做的東西，
也許會造成職業生涯沒甚麼累積性，
出國的機會也許要自己出錢才能去，
不過自己賺回的是每天可以跟虎妹一起準時上下班，
以及慢慢回復的身體，
以後也可以有時間照顧八月要出生的小孩。

過去兩年玩的東西，
也許會慢慢讓它變成閒暇時間做的小東西。
不過閒暇做的東西很難講，
會不會完成也很難說，
總之就是走著瞧吧。
還有很多可玩可看的，
以及永遠追不完的技術.... Orz

看到一些人在討論區說作業系統是免費的為何機器還是那麼貴.... 這其實是一種迷思。一台機器裡面的作業系統如果收費也不過佔機器售價的十分之一 (有的還不到)，要希望因為作業系統免費而機器大降價是一種不切實際的期望，只會讓自己更失望罷了。

開放軟體 (Open Source Software, 或說開源軟體) 雖然是版權免費，但是根據這些軟體開發出來的套件、機器等等都還是需要人力資源成本去開發的。開源軟體不等於免費軟體，可是很多人都沒這個觀念，都只看到 Free 就以為是免費了，其實 Free 代表的是自由使用，不是免費啊....

米勒畫展與特權

下午去看米勒繪畫展，遇到令人無奈的事。我和虎妹大約是傍晚五點到達位於南海路的歷史博物館，在剛進入排隊的隊伍準備依序入場的時候，後面接上來一個家庭的媽媽就一直抱怨著隊伍好長，結果她就在排隊的隊伍和大庭廣眾之下開始用不小的音量打電話給她某位朋友說能不能讓她們不用排隊就進去看畫展。在剛聽到的時候，我和虎妹對望了一下，驚訝於這位媽媽的~~目中無人~~有膽識。沒幾分鐘她朋友就回電說要她打某某電話就可以不用排隊直接進場看畫展。然後她一打電話去就說她是某某特助，現在正帶著家人 (除了她先生之外還有幾位十幾歲的孩子) 在歷史博物館排隊，但是因為隊伍很長，所以希望可以直接進場云云。然後對方也告訴她直接到歷史博物館展區入口旁邊某攤位找人就可以不用等待進去看展了。然後這位媽媽就大喇喇的帶著她的家人直奔歷史博物館入口去了。之後我和虎妹排了大概一個半小時才進入會場開始兩小時的畫展觀賞。

其實最近和虎妹看了不少次的藝術文化展覽，像是之前也在歷史博物館的兵馬俑展以及故宮博物院的華麗巴洛克展，其實蠻高興看到有許多國人都開始願意去參觀這樣的展覽 (就算是一窩蜂的跟風也是好的)。而且在看展的時候，也感受到國內的展覽單位開始像國外的展覽一樣有著不錯的導覽環境 (如導覽語音設備的租用以及手機語音導覽等等在國外博物館都早已提供的服務)。不過國內展覽單位對於看展環境如入場人數的控制、展場安全秩序的維護等等似乎還是沒有辦法像國外一樣有很好的控制。以我和虎妹看的兵馬俑展和米勒展為例，其實很多時候我們看到的只是參展民眾萬頭鑽動的人頭，而無法好好的看到展品的美麗和意境，只能靠著導覽器材的說明和事後購買展覽書籍來真正欣賞展品的優美之處。(是說這樣的話那我們只要買書和導覽語音 CD 在家看就好了，去現場看展要幹嘛? 在家看還不用在現場跟人家擠，不用擔心被人家不小心踩，還可以好整以暇的不怕擋到別人的視線...)

至於前面提到的排隊問題，虎妹在該女士帶著她的家庭離開直奔展覽入口的時候說了一句「所以有關係就沒關係，是這樣嗎？」我本來其實也是有點不太高興的。不過之後想到，也許當我們看到別人這樣做的時候會憤憤不平，但如果是我們自己因為有朋友在某展覽或活動中服務而可以快速入場的時候，我們會不會也是會一樣做呢? 我們跟別人的差別，也許只在我們會私底下到旁邊打電話不讓別人聽到，而不是公開大喇喇的打電話讓大家知道我可以快速入場吧....

不過，米勒展的相關作品真的是不錯，只是比照起自己年初在美國西岸看美術展的經驗，我想國內的展覽環境也許還有需要改善的吧....

The couple is the winner of Human Rights Award 2007 for China rewarded by Reporters Without Borders organization in France.

Hu-Jia is now been arrested into custody by the Chinese government and is been accused for "subverting state authority" and his wife, Zeng Jin-Yan and their 9 weeks old girl are now forbidden to contact anyone and are not allowed to go outside of her house, just after they got the award from RWB.

It's not a movie. It's a documentary video made by the prisoners themselves!

這不是一部電影，而是一部由被監禁的人自己所拍攝的紀錄片！

The prisoners are a couple who live in Beijing, China. They had been rewarded by the Reporters Without Borders as the winner of Human Rights Award 2007 for China in November 2007 for they have devoted themselves on the human rights progression in China, even under the close watch of the Chinese government (as to how close they are, you can watch the video to know).

被監禁的人是住在中國北京的一對夫婦。他們剛剛才在2007年的11月因為他們對中國人權發展所做的貢獻而獲得法國無國界記者組織為中國所設立的2007年人權獎。然而他們所做的貢獻卻都是在中國政府的嚴密監視下所完成的 (至於有多嚴密，看影片吧)。

However, they could not be there to accept the award because after they got the award the husband Hu-Jia (胡佳) is been arrested by the Chinese government into custody for "subverting state authority" and his wife, Zeng Jin-Yan (曾金燕), and their 8 weeks old daughter are forbidden to contact anyone and could not get outside of their house.

然而，他們沒辦法親自領取這樣的獎項了。因為在他們被宣布獲得這樣的獎項不久之後，丈夫胡佳被中國政府以「企圖顛覆政府」的罪名逮捕入獄，而他的妻子曾金燕和他們八個星期大的小孩被關在他們的房子裡軟禁起來禁止與外界接觸。

After I saw this documentary video and know the information, I feel very sad. How come a government can do this to its people? Knowing the human right situation in China and then turn back to see where I live, I feel very lucky that I can live in such a free country so I can think, talk and write about anything freely without too much limits! (Well, at least I will not get arrested if I criticize anything that happened in our government).

當我看到這樣的紀錄片和讀到這些訊息的時候，我感到非常的難過。一個政府怎能這樣對待它的人民呢？當我知道中國的人權狀況之後，反過來看到我所住的台灣，我真的感到我是何其幸運的住在一個讓我可以自由思想、說話和寫東西而沒有太多限制的國家！ (至少我不會因為批評我們的政府而被逮捕下獄 )

This is a shame to China for they have promised to improve their human right record and make it better in 2008, the Olympic year for China. In fact, it seems it's not better but getting worse because there are more dissidents been watched and arrested by the Chinese government.

在中國即將舉辦奧林匹克的這一年，發生這樣的事情對中國來說是一項諷刺，因為他們曾經公開宣布過會改善他們的人權紀錄。然而看起來情況並沒有更好，反而更糟，因為我看到更多的新聞是有關於中國政府開始逮捕和監視更多的異議份子了。

China always claims Taiwan, the much more democratic country, as part of China. However, compared with this case I don't think so. Taiwan is now a very free country that China could not imagine. It's not possible to let Taiwan people to accept the current Chinese government. If China really wants Taiwan back, please change yourself first! If not, sorry I would not agree Taiwan is a part of China.

中國總是說台灣這個非常自由的國家是中國的一部分。然而，在胡佳這個事件看起來我想並不是這樣的，因為台灣已經變成了中國所無法想像的自由國家了，台灣民眾是不可能會接受中國現在這樣的專制體制的。如果中國真的希望台灣回來成為它的一部分，請先改變自己吧！不然的話，我不會同意台灣是中國的一部分的。

It would be a challenge to them and might have a conflict with the Beijing policemen. I just pray they won't get arrested or been badly treated by the policemen....

Recently I updated my MSN Messenger v8.1 to Windows Live Messenger 2008 (v8.5), and it comes with Windows Live Writer and Windows Live Photo Gallery. I had installed their beta version before but I did not use them. Today I decided to give them a try.

最近我更新了我的 MSN Messenger 8.1 版到新版的 Windows Live Messenger 2008 (8.5版)，隨之而來的是 Windows Live Writer 部落格離線編輯程式和 Windows Live Photo Gallery 相簿管理程式。我以前曾經安裝過這兩個程式，不過一直都沒在使用。今天我決定來試用看看。

I use MSN Messenger a lot so Windows Live Messenger is not new to me, I guess I will skip this part.

我還蠻常使用 MSN Messenger 的，所以 Windows Live Messenger 對我來說還算熟悉，我想我可以直接跳過這個部分。

I had used some blog editor like w.bloggar before, and it's good to use. However, it has one problem that it could not support Unicode well, so I would get some trouble when I want to post something with Chinese. It's still good to use w.bloggar if I want to post something in English, but I decided to edit the blog post online anyway.

我以前曾經使用過一些部落格編輯器如w.bloggar，而且其實它用起來還不錯。不過它有個問題就是無法支援萬國字元碼，所以在我想要寫一些中文文章到部落格的時候會遇到一些亂碼的問題。使用 w.bloggar 來寫英文文章其實是一種很愉快的經驗，不過那時我還是決定要在線上即時編輯我的文章。

Now when I use Windows Live Writer I think it's not bad. It has a Vista UI (which means beautiful), and is also easy to use. It also claims it supports Unicode (if you do not see any error codes in this article then it does support Unicode). If no other issues happened in the coming few days, I think I will continue to use it.

現在當我使用 Windows Live Writer 的時候我覺得它還不賴。它有一個跟 Vista 類似的使用者介面 (代表著美觀)，而且用起來也還算容易。它也宣稱支援萬國字元碼 (如果你沒在這篇文章中看到亂碼的話那就是真的)。如果未來幾天沒有其他問題發生的話，我想我會繼續使用這個軟體。

As to Windows Live Photo Gallery, I guess it's trying to catch up Google Picasa. It's enough for showing your pictures to friends, colleagues and family members with Photo Gallery. It now also has a Vista UI and you can categorize pictures by dates, tags and folders. But if you want to do some photo management or editing, Picasa is better.

至於 Windows Live Photo Gallery，我想它正試著想要趕上 Google Picasa。如果要展示照片給你的朋友、同事和家人的話，我想它是夠用的。他現在也有個類似 Vista 的使用者介面，並且你可以依照時間、標籤及目錄來分類你的照片。不過如果你想要做一些相片管理或是編輯的話，Picasa 是比較好用的。

I do not download other Windows Live applications so I could not comment on them, but you can give them a try.

我並沒有下載其他的 Windows Live 程式所以我不能對它們有甚麼評論，不過你也可以試用看看。

Finally Wikimania 2007 is over last Sunday. Although I could only join the event for 1.5 days due to my new job and my sudden family issues, and I could only stay in the control room during the program going on, it's still a great event!

終於2007年維基媒體年會在上星期日結束了。雖然因為開始了新工作以及臨時的家庭因素我只能參加一天半的會議，而且就算參加了也還是只能待在控制室幫忙，不過還是覺得這是一個很棒的會議！

Yep, I'm still here.

Some of you might wonder why I changed my user profile on blogger to say "I was a senior software engineer of Ulead Systems Inc.". I changed that sentence to past form in January because I left Ulead in December 28, 2006.

Don't get me wrong. I still love Ulead a lot. I left because I think it's time for me to seek for another career. Ulead now is been merged into InterVideo Digital Tech. However, its products, the developing teams and the Ulead brand are still there. You will still see products to be released under the Ulead brand.

InterVideo now has became a subsidiary of Corel's Digital Media Group, so when they release any new products from Ulead and InterVideo, you will also see the name of Corel DMG to be mentioned.

I will still be active in the InterVideo Ulead User-to-User Forum. If you have any questions on InterVideo or Ulead products, please do not post them here but post them to the user forum.

I will now put more efforts on the annual event of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, Wikimania. If you wish to discuss on that, you could leave a message in my Wikimania talk page.

It's the Christmas season again. :) As a Christian and a person who was born in December 25, I always like Christmas a lot. This year there will be something different, but it's still not the time to tell why. Maybe a few days later I will let you guys know why it's a little different.

Last Christmas I helped to hold the Christmas party in InterVideo Ulead because I was a member of Ulead Employee Welfare Committee. This year we will not have a party for the Christmas in InterVideo Ulead, but we do have a party for joining the Corel family. As some of you already know, Corel had completed the acquisition for InterVideo Ulead in December 12. On that day, some Corel management people came to Taipei and met us in the employee meeting to announce the acquisition. And after the meeting we had a cocktail party to celebrate the event. If you wish to know how it goes, you can check the party photos in my flickr album.

I took some pictures of Corel people in the party. For example, this one:
This is the CEO of Corel Corporation, David Dobson. I think I like him, and he is much more handsome than what you see on the picture. Will he take Corel InterVideo Ulead to another higher stage? Maybe, we will see.

And I photoed another Ulead people here:
This is Tobias Openshaw. Most of time we call him Tobie. He is the editing manager in the Strategic Marketing Division of Ulead and was the product marketing manager for Ulead's video product line. He is also the photographer to take photos in the parties in InterVideo Ulead. He is very active in film editing and helped Ulead on the promotion for VideoStudio / MediaStudio Pro a lot. Before joining Ulead he was an armorer for some independent film in USA. You can see his filmography on IMDB as well.

He is a really nice person, and I like his pose here when I was trying to take a photo of him. :)

We enjoyed the cocktail party for a while, and that reminds me about the past life I had with Ulead. Well, it's not bad, isn't it?

Tomorrow I will join the Christmas activities in the church, maybe I will come back and share the feeling I have in the church.

Taipei chosen to host Wikimania 2007

After weeks preparing the Wikimania City Bidding Contest, the jury had announced that Taipei is been chosen to host Wikimania 2007 in September 25 (Monday). As a Wikipedian and a member of the Taipei bidding team, I'm very happy with the result. But we did not happy for too long because we have realized that now there are more responsibilities to be put on us (mostly the pressure is from ourselves). Now it's not just a bid or contest, it's a real thing to host a international conference. I think we need more blessings and wisdom for the preparation of Wikimania 2007.

Last Thursday night I made the bidding banner by using the newly announced Ulead PhotoImpact 12. Well, it's not difficult to make it. Just a little editing and then the bidding banner is done. Nice looking and sweet. :) I've been used to use Ulead products to make my life to have more fun (and sometimes to do some serious things). Now I'm considering to make some video for Wikimania by using MediaStudio. BTW, the most difficult thing is not how you use the tool. Most of the time it's how you can get the idea to edit the video. And now I would definitely need some idea to make that video. Fortunately I still have 11 months for the video so I can take my time for the idea. :)

I know some people in other bidding team do not like the decision the jury had made. But take it seriously, if the jury chose your city to host Wikimania, we people in the other end of the earth will also have the issues that you have. BTW, I think maybe those people do not understand this because sometimes people just cannot see things in a much neutral point...

All I can say is that we Taipei team will try our best for Wikimania 2007 and we are looking forward that you can join us together to work on Wikimania in Taipei. At least, we are all sharing the same vision of Wikimedia Foundation and we share our knowledge to benefit the human beings via Wikimedia projects like Wikipedia.

People who work on non-profit Wikimedia projects are volunteers and devote themselves to share knowledge in their leisure time. It does not conflict with my job in Ulead, if you have doubts on that. :)

Think Different, Do Smarter, Work for Joy

Today I decided to change the name of this blog. Something is changing but I think if you care about Ulead then you will know what is going to happen soon.

These days I was thinking about redesigning my blog, not just the style but also the content. I have some plans to do but I'm a little busy now. However, I will try to write regularly here.

Some old Uleaders might still remember the working attitude "Work Hard, Work Smart" from the founder, Way-Zen Chen. But now I have my own working attitude as "Think Different, Do Smarter, Work for Joy", and I think the most important part should be "Work for Joy". Without joy, work would be just boring. I think I'm lucky because I still have joys in my work. And I wish you readers would also have joys in your works.

Since my last post, Ulead had released the 1st official service pack for MediaStudio Pro 8. If you are interested, go ahead and try it.

FIFA World Cup Germany now is going on and will have its final winner in a few days. I did not notice this soccer game until I watched Italian versus Australia. Now I'm crazy about this game. I'm sorry to know that Germany just lose the semi-final and got the 3rd position. I'm sorry not just because we have a subsidiary in Germany but also I voted for Germany as the winner of FIFA WCG in the "Guess the Winner" game in Taiwan (that means now I lose a chance to win a Sony VAIO. What a pity). Now the Portugal vs France semi-final is going on and I wish the Portugal team could win because they have a good and interesting coach, but who knows? I might be wrong again. Anyway, in a few hours we will know who is the one to compete with the Italian team in the final game.

Few hours later it would be a big day to Ulead, just wish everything can go well.

Oh yes, several days ago, Eric Chen, the product marketing manager of DVD MovieFactory, have discussed with me about the possibilities to hold some activities on my blog to send out some free copies of DVD MovieFactory 5, the first consumer HD/BD authoring software. If you wish to know the details then you can keep an eye on my blog.

And, the author of a great book, Getting Results with MediaStudio Pro 8.0, now is cutting the price of the book down to clear his stock. I think the price is affordable to someone who wants to try video editing. It's not only useful for MSP users, but also useful for video-graphers because it covered most topics on video editing from beginners to professionals and has some excellent tutorials for readers. If you wish to know video editing, I think this book is a must buy.

Something New in Ulead Today - DVD MovieFactory, VideoStudio and MediaStudio Pro

Today I just got the box of Ulead DVD MovieFactory 5 from Eric Chen, the Product Marketing Manager of DVDMF. I know some people wish to see the box version of DVDMF5 in these days, so I will put some pictures here.

According to Eric, Blu-ray is still supported in this version. However, at this time it can only offer to burn a Blu-ray data disk because the Blu-ray spec for video is not finalized yet. I think it's no doubt that DVDMF 5 is still the first consumer software that offers both Blu-ray and HD DVD burning. When the Blu-ray video spec is been finalized, I believe Ulead will release the Blu-ray video burning pack ASAP.

This box is a small size one for selling in Costco and some shopping malls. For selling DVDMF 5 in computer stores there will be a regular size for the box. Soon you will see the box to be available in the store in U.S. and some other regions.

I had took some pictures of the regular size box of DVDMF 5, but I left them in my office PC so I cannot post now. Maybe I will update them to this post later on Monday.

OK, now for the second news.

After a few days waiting, today Ulead VideoStudio 10 Plus box version is been shipped in U.S. and in European. Now you can put your order to Ulead Mall to buy a box of UVS 10 Plus now. :) If you have any opinions or ideas on this, you can post to Ulead VideoStudio forum.

The 3rd news is, we have released the first Service Pack Preview of Ulead MediaStudio Pro 8 today. You can download the release note for complete information on the features and updates included in the service pack. If any feedbacks or opinions, you are welcomed to post to Ulead MediaStudio Pro forum or send them to the service pack feedback page.

However, this download is only a preview, check the Disclaimer before you install it. The real service pack will be released a few weeks later.

UVS 10 supports High Definition video editing and supports true Dolby Digital 5.1 editing. For more detailed information on UVS 10 features, check the features page.

In most video editors you will be limited by only one UI layout to edit your video. Sometimes it's not convenient for users to use the interface. For example, a left hand user might not feel comfortable when the editing options are been listed on the right side of the interface. In this version of UVS, you can have some freedoms to set the UI layout.

As you can see there are 4 UI layouts you can set in UVS 10. After you set it, the UI layout will be like the followings.

Although it's a minor change, but I think it improves the usability of the interface for some people. :)

In this new version Ulead has improved the rendering performance to be much faster. If you are using a dual core CPU then you might be glad to know that UVS 10 runs faster on dual core. You can see the benchmark chart of UVS 10 with different Intel CPUs as following.

The burning module of UVS 10 is coming from the newly released Ulead DVD MovieFactory 5, so UVS 10 also supports to burn video files as VCD, DVD (both single and double layer) and HD DVD.

I know some of you come to my blog because you wish to find a pirate copy of UVS 10 by using Google or MSN Search (yes, I can see where you are and what search keyword you used in Google or MSN Search by using some blog tool). However, if you think UVS 10 is good, please be good to be a legal user because we engineers make a living by selling the products we made.

First HD DVD disk authored by Ulead DVD MovieFactory 5.0 user

A user of Ulead DVD MovieFactory 5 called WiFi-Spy had released a HD DVD demo disk image file in March 30th to let anyone who may interests to test the disk on their HD DVD players. WiFi-Spy claimed he shot the content in the International Consumer Electronics Show 2006 with a High-Definition camcorder, Sony HDR-HC1 and is eager to know if anyone can play the HD DVD demo disk on a real HD DVD player. Soon, a Japanese user found the disk image file and gave it a try on the newly released Toshiba HD DVD player HD-XA1 yesterday and he has found the HD DVD demo disk can be played very well.

The Japanese user has burned the HD DVD disk on a DVD-R and play the disk successfully on his new Toshiba HD DVD player. He has recorded the playing as an video and you can check the video in his blog.

I think it's a good news to Ulead and the HD world because now users can use DVD MovieFactory to author their home-made videos as HD DVDs and play them on a real HD DVD player!

At the present time, there is still no other consumer HD DVD authoring programs available and Ulead is the company that can say we have HD DVD supports that works and the price for DVD MovieFactory is acceptable for home users. I know there is still some more steps Ulead needs to do, but it's already a good sign to us. :)

Note: Toshiba HD DVD player HD-XA1 now can be purchased in Japan since 2006/3/31. If you have friends in Japan, you can ask them to buy one for you from Amazon Japan. If you do not have such a friend in Japan, you can wait till April 15th or pre-order in Toshiba and ChannelIntelligence.

Support Taiwan to join the World Health Organization

Since the outbreak of SARS in Taiwan during year 2003, it has illustrated how Taiwan can help the world to prevent the spread of contagius diseases. However, due to the political status of Taiwan, Taiwan now still cannot be a member of World Health Organization and cannot help to assist the global society on the health wars. Also, Taiwanese people cannot get enough information directly from WHO when new diseases are announced. Personal Computer World just gave a review for Ulead DVD MovieFactory 5, and they gave Ulead DVD MovieFactory 5 4 ponts out of 5. I think it's a good news for Ulead.

Generally we have got many good responses from DVD MF 5 users, I wish the good responses can go on. As you can see, I love Ulead products, not just because I'm an employee of Ulead, but also I'm a real user of Ulead products. It's lots of fun to use our products to do some creations. :)

About fake Ulead VideoStudio 10 Plus version

I have noticed there are many users now searching for VideoStudio 10 Plus via Google and MSN Search these days, just like the situation for DVD MovieFactory 5 few days ago. Follow the Google/MSN Search links you might find some download links for VideoStudio 10, but I want to let you know that those links will not let you get the right VideoStudio 10 release. VideoStudio 10 Plus now is still not released yet (but soon), so if you download it from those links you might get some fake version and it might crash your systems. I've told you this, don't come to me or go to the Ulead forum if you got any problems with those fake versions.

Yes they did it, they added an Anti-Shake filter, that if I may say so, rivals those that cost about $80. I know this first hand. I have done a comparison of a competitor's filter, that I purchased for about $80 , and in my opinion the Ulead Anti-Shake beat it.

Audio Enhancements
Pitch Shift filter raises or lowers the key of the audio clips without altering the length.

Auto-Rotate will automatically rotate digital camera photos to insure slideshow photos are presented correctly.

Divx and MPEG4 support.
You will be able to output ttemplates for creating video for iPods, PSPs, Smartphones, PDA's and other devices. You can import and export DivX with the appropriate codec.

It is also suppose allow you to use your remote control on Windows Media Center PC's to capture video and burn DVD's.

However, these are not the full feature sets. You have to wait a little for the release. :)

Ulead DVD MovieFactory 5 now is available on Ulead website. If you are interested, check its product page.

It now includes Ulead PureHD(c) feature to let you author your video as high definition disks such as Blu-ray and HD DVD, but it still remains the feature to let you author as DVD5 (4.7GB) or DVD9 (Dual Layer DVD, 8.5GB). Also it improves the usability and menu authoring functions. You can see the feature comparison between DVDMF 4 and DVDMF 5 in this page. I know some of you keep searching information about DVDMF 5 on Google and MSN Search in these days. Now you can have a chance to see it or own a copy of it.

New Ulead DVD MovieFactory 5 announced

Today Ulead announced the new Ulead DVD MovieFactory 5, an new release of the consumer DVD authoring package offering easy disc authoring, an expanded range of creative options and the first disc authoring package to provide future-ready support for both HD DVD and Blu-ray disc formats. If anyone is interested in detail information, check the news release.

It will be available in late March in US.

I remember when we were trying to do the MTBF process for DVDMF 5 in just 2 days before the Chinese New Year Eve, we stayed in office over-night and wait for the Quality Assurance engineers as real end-users to use DVDMF 5 to author meaningful DVD/HD/BD disks and test all the functions of DVDMF. An usual MTBF process time in Ulead for a software package like DVDMF will be 6 hours, that means the program cannot fail the function or crash and should work properly as we defined for at least 6 hours. But if any step in the process takes longer than 10 minutes then the step will be counted as 10 minutes only (for example, the transcoding step might take 30 minutes but we will only count it as 10 minutes). If any QA engineer see any major function failed or crashed then RD engineers must find out and fix the problem ASAP and the counting time might be restarted, so we might finish the MTBF process in about 8 to 12 hours in the end (that's why we stayed over-night). The longest MTBF time record in Ulead in my memories (for the past 5 years) is made when we were testing DVDMF 3.5 Suite 2 years ago. I think the record is 15 hours?

Finally we finish the MTBF process for DVDMF 5 before the Chinese New Year so we can have a very good vacation during the Chinese New Year period. Well-done, the whole DVDMF team! :)

I do not know the software developing process in other companies, but I think in Ulead the process is good, which makes Ulead products to be more stable. But that does not mean they will not have problems in some cases. Just as I say in many forums: "Nothing is perfect but we can try our best to find the solution for the problem." Wish you guys would like this new DVDMF version. :D

Sorry if you see my blog is not in correct form on Internet Explorer

Just found my blog will not be shown correctly with Internet Explorer. After some research, I found it's the problem of TrueFresco Site Referrer. When some visitors come with a very long URL, the site referrer will cause the blog not to be shown correctly. Just removed the site referrer code in my blog template and check again on IE, this time it's still not right because the original blog template made by Douglas Bowman will only be viewed correctly on FireFox.

I think I should be responsible for this because I only use FireFox now. I only use IE when I want to read some articles on Microsoft websites and do Windows Updates.

Maybe I should try to modify the blog CSS code to have my own blog template that will work on both FireFox and IE. :)

Awesome COOL 3D Artworks

Ulead COOL 3D (C3D) and Ulead COOL 3D Production Studio (C3DPS) are 3D titling and animation softwares that you can use to create 3D logos and 3D animations. Before COOL 3D 3.5, people in Ulead only think COOL 3D can be marketed as a web animation and 3D titling tool. But when we saw Popov Vladimir (from COOL 3D Deisgn) to use COOL 3D to do 3D modeling and really did a good job, we were amazed by his talent and how COOL 3D can be used for, so we decided to include some 3D artworks from Popov in COOL 3D 3.5 (with Popov's permission) to let people know the capabilities of COOL 3D. And when we were developing COOL 3D Production Studio, the next version of COOL 3D 3.5 (we called it COOL 3D 4.0 at that time), we added a feature to import 3D Studio files and a Lathe Object Editor and FreeForm tool in C3DPS to let people do the 3D modeling more easily (these features were all done by me). I think we really did a great step in COOL 3D Production Studio. In today, Ulead COOL 3D Production Studio is still one of the best-selling products in Ulead, not only because it does good in web animation, 3D titling and 3D modeling, it now can also be used in DVD menu button creation and to create video animation frames in Ulead DVD and video products and other non-Ulead softwares.

It's really amazing to see someone using your tools to do some awesome artworks, especially when they are doing very well. Max-UK is another user of Ulead COOL 3D Production Studio. The first time I know him is in Ulead's official user web-board. At that time I enjoyed answering people's questions and help to solve the problems that people have with Ulead products in the web-board. Then I saw Max showed up in the COOL 3D board and kept posting about his amazing artworks by using C3DPS. After that, Max created a Renderosity user page to show his fine C3DPS artworks. He started from some 3D space ships, and now he is working on some 3D armors (the armor image you see in this article is also made by him a few days ago). He said he will continue to post some more 3D stuffs by using C3DPS, you can go to his Renderosity user page to see more.

Max, you really did great on this. It would be a pleasure to me to see your artworks. :)

Interesting Technology - Multi-Input Touch Screen

Just found the video on the net, and it reminds me about the movie, Minority Report. In the movie, Tom Cruise uses a light-sensing screen with his fingers to control the computer to search the criminal database for information. This video is much like the idea in the movie, but the computer screen in this video is a touch screen which can accept multiple inputs at the same time, also it can sense the finger pressure user pressed on the screen. If this video is not a fake, then I think it might change the user interface of many softwares in the future.

In my opinion, mouse and keyboard are really not suitable for human beings to input data. If we can find an new way to use the user interface, then we can make our lifes much better. Multi-Input Touch Screen might be a way to go, Voice Recognization might be another. Hey! What will happen if we integrate MITS with Ulead PhotoImpact or Voice Recognization with Ulead InstaMedia? That must be very interesting! :) However, it's not me to make decisions to support these technologies or not.

Technologies we see today is only a fiction yesterday. The world is really changing fast and we have to catch up. Maybe it's the destiny of a engineer.

Australian magazine PC Authority just give Ulead MediaStudio Pro 8 a positive review

MSP8 got a 5 of 6 points in this review, I think it's not bad. As I've wrote in the Amateur Video Editing Group at Yahoo, I like MSP more than Ulead VideoStudio because MSP has much more freedom and possibilities to let me edit my video. I know there are still something in MSP needed to be improved, but that's what I thought about MSP, easy to use, creative and stable. I really like MSP a lot but will MSP survive in this competitive world? I (and many other Uleaders) do wish it will.

Peter Lin and Ookawara are blogging again

Peter is the Vice President of Ulead Asia-Pacific Sales Center, and also the General Manager of Ulead Japan and Ulead EU. Since last April he was blogging about his thoughts and feelings on his family, Japan and Ulead, but in October he had stopped the blogging for some reason. Now he is back on blogging again. Peter is a Taiwanese but because he is familiar with Japanese culture and is graduated from the Nihon Denshi College, a specialized information technology institution in Japan, so he moved to Tokyo with his family. If any of you can understand Japanese and wish to know something about Ulead or Japan, you can go to his blog to read some.

Ookawara, the Board Director of Ulead Japan and a Japanese, is also back on blogging on his life again, but it's still in Japanese. He usually writes about wine, sakei, movies and some Japanese cultures in his blog, maybe you will have fun on reading his blog.

Yesterday is the last day of the Chinese New Year vacation of Ulead headquarter in Taiwan. After this weekend we will go back to the office on next Monday. Just wish it will not be a mess day. :)

Some Chinese New Year Traditions

In this year the day of Chinese New Year Eve is at January 28, and now it's the first hour of the new dog year. In this day Chinese people will go back to their hometown and have a dinner with their family members around a round table to talk about what they did in last year and the wishes in the upcoming new year. Before midnight the elders will gather all the young people in the family and give them some red packet money for wishing them to have lucky in the new year. Before the young man get the red packet money, he or she must say something good to make the elders happy then he or she can get the money. In the tradition it becomes a happy time just like Christmas in the western world.

In the Chinese tradition, if a man or woman is married, then he or she cannot get red packet money anymore. Instead, he or she will become the one who give the red packet money to the young family members and to the elders. So, now I'm the one to give the red packet money in my family because I'm already married. But fortunately, I do not need to give the red packet money to many people because there are not too many family members.

The day after the Chinese New Year is a day that a wife should go back to her parents' family. I'm not sure the reason why all Chinese wifes should go back to their parents' family on that day, but we've been following the tradition for so many years to make it an ancient tradition. So on January 30 I will go to Tai-Chung county of Taiwan with Rebecca to visit her mother. I can predict that the traffic will be a jam, but we still have to go back because it's been some time Rebecca does not see her mother.

In Taiwan the Christmas day is already passed but in some other countries Christmas is still not passed yet, so I think it's still OK to say Merry Christmas now. Wish you all have a great Christmas time today.

Some status updates for the Christmas party of Ulead HQ and InterVideo Taiwan. Well, not too many people came to the party (about 1/4 people of both companies) and the live band did not come as expected, but we still have lots of fun and joy in the party! I and other Ulead/IVI EWC members had prepared 12 extra gifts for the people who joined the party, and the 2 biggest gifts (Play Station 2 gaming boxes) were all been given to Uleaders: Quality Assurance Engineer, Patty Dai, and the Senior Financial Manager, Julia. Let us congratulate them to be the winners!

Well, as I mentioned in my previous post, today is my birthday. I and Rebecca did not go for travelling as planned because she has to deliver 2 Beta cam tapes for her company, GOOD TV, to the broadcasting company. If she cannot deliver the tapes on time, some TV programs in the evening will have problems. So, by Rebecca's request, I decide to go with her and spend some time to visit the food market in downtown after her delivered the tapes. Well, I think the foods are delicious, but they are a little expensive. But why care about the price? It's my birthday!

GOODTV is a Christian satellite TV station in Taiwan, and also is the only Chinese Christian satellite TV station in the world (at the present time). Now it's been located at channel 15 in Taiwan and has an Internet broadcasting site. Rebecca already works for this company for more than 6 years now. If you can understand Chinese, you can go to http://www.goodtv.tv to know more information about this TV station.

Last night I and Rebecca went to Jedidiah's church for the Christmas Eve activity. We had heard 2 stories about how the lives to be changed by Jesus. Rebecca is been moved by the first story. Well, I think God is really good for He always watches us and never sleeps, and we are been protected by Him and his angels. I think maybe it's God telling me that I should be strong and keep faith on Him. I do believe it is.

All right, I think it's time for me to go to bed now. (It's 4:00am here in Taiwan) See you next time.

Christmas Party for Ulead HQ and InterVideo Taiwan

We are going to have a Christmas party for Ulead HQ and InterVideo Taiwan at Dec. 21, 2005. This would be the first big employee event for both Ulead HQ and InterVideo Taiwan. We plan to have a gift exchange activity in the party, so I need to go to the shopping mall tomorrow for the gifts. I would not only buy the gift for myself, but also buy the gifts for both companies with my colleagues because I'm a member of Ulead Employee Welfare Committee. But we still not know what to buy now. Should we buy Sony PS2, or should we buy Apple iPod Shuffle? Or any other gifts? Maybe we can only decide when we get to the shopping mall tomorrow.

BTW, Christmas is coming, and it's also my birthday (I was born at Dec. 25, 1974). My wife Rebecca thinks we should go for travel again in Dec. 24 to Dec. 25 for celebrating, maybe I should think about it.

I just come back from the church group gathering with Rebecca. Tonight we are celebrating Christmas in advance. Everyone is having lots of fun and joy. I think it would be a great blessing from God for me today, especially after I have some sad things happen in the afternoon. I think I should thank God for this.

No matter what happens, we still need to live our lifes with joy, because God is with us and He is always watching us, isn't He?

Will be visited by IT Home Weekly reporter

Tomorrow afternoon I will be visited by a reporter of Taiwanese magazine, IT Home Weekly, for a column about the life of a IT person. The reporter wishes to ask me about some questions like: why do you get into the IT industry? How do you feel about the programming life? Any leisure time hobbies? What do you plan to do in the future? And bluh bluh bluh....Have you guys ever been visited by a reporter before? I never have. I only have a experience to meet a editor from a Chinese magazine "Programmer" on MSN messenger to discuss about the differences of the developer life in Taiwan, China and Hong Kong. (The editor made the discussion as 2 column articles) Now I'm a little nervous about this. I feel a little uncomfortable because I'm not used to expose myself to the media and the public.

You may want to ask me why I feel uncomfortable about this, since I already have several blogs on the net to tell people what I think and what I do. Well, I think there are some differences. Although I have several blogs available, not many people are reading them so I can feel free to write what I think. And, I can control what to write and what not to write on my blogs. But if someone come to visit you and write something about you on the media, it would be a little different. (Sometimes it would be a big difference) Anyone who read the column article will know you immediately. And you cannot control what the reporter writes about you.

So, why do I still wish to get visited by the reporter? Well, I don 't know. Maybe to get famous is one of my desires. (But it's possible I might still be no-one after the column article is been published).

The reporter said he will contact me again today. Well, let's wait and see what he wants from me. :)

The day Ulead HQ moved to the new building

Due to the purchase offer from InterVideo Inc. on March, Ulead has some changes inside in these months. One of the biggest changes is that Ulead HQ moved to an new building on July (but the new building is not too far from the old one, maybe 500 meters I think).

This picture was taken before the old Ulead HQ building. Most people in this picture are still in Ulead, but Becky, the first girl on the left, just left Ulead on Sept. 30th.

All people in this picture are RD engineers, however not from the same division.

After 5 years passed, I think Ulead is a good company to work in. Uleaders are very friendly and easy-going, but they also work very hard to deliver the Class A Products. (Any Uleaders still remember what "Class A Product" means and what "Work Hard, Work Smart" is?) I really like these colleagues and maybe it's the reason I still stay in Ulead.

The culture in Ulead now is changing (maybe more InterVideo style), I just pray it can be better.

And I believe it will. :)

Hi, I'm Hsiang-Tai Chien who work in Ulead Systems, Inc. and I work for Ulead as a senior software engineer in the data burning team of DVD RD Division. I have several Chinese blogs already but I think it would be nice to start my English blog here. Not knowing how many people around the world will read my blog, but I will post something about what I see and what I think in my life here.

I joined Ulead since 2000/9/27, and I was one of the engineers of Ulead COOL 3D 3.5 and Ulead COOL 3D Production Studio 1.0 (for 3D render engine and DirectX/3D Studio file import/export). After Ulead COOL 3D Production Studio 1.0 was released at 2002/11/15, I was transferred to the Data Burning Team of Ulead and help to develop the data/audio burning product, Ulead Burn.Now (for audio burning and audio file processing), till now. Tomorrow it will be my 5th anniversary of the day I work in Ulead. Maybe it's a good time to start this blog to celebrate. :) However, my English ability might be a little poor and I will try my best to express my words well, so if you guys cannot understand my English, please forgive me.
